ADAS Calibration

What is ADAS?

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) are technologies designed to support drivers and improve vehicle safety. By combining sensors, cameras, and automated controls with a human-machine interface, ADAS helps reduce accidents and enhance the driving experience. These systems can detect obstacles, monitor driver inputs, and, when necessary, intervene to prevent collisions.

Because most road accidents are caused by human error, ADAS technologies aim to automate, adapt, and enhance driving functions. They are proven to lower the risk of crashes and fatalities by alerting drivers to hazards, applying safeguards, and even taking temporary control of the vehicle if required.

Examples of ADAS Features

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) / Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (PACC)
Uses radar, lidar, or cameras to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Predictive systems also integrate navigation data and forward cameras to adjust speed for bends, junctions, or changing speed limits.

  • Lane Keeping Assist / Adaptive Lane Guidance
A forward-facing camera tracks road markings, gently steering to keep the vehicle within its lane. Advanced versions center the car between markings.

  • Traffic Sign Recognition
Combines navigation data with camera input to display road signs and speed limits directly to the driver.

  • High Beam Assist
Automatically switches between high and low beam using camera input, improving visibility without dazzling other drivers.

  • Blind Spot Assist / Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
Uses radar or rear cameras to warn of vehicles in blind spots or approaching traffic while reversing from driveways or parking spaces.

Why is ADAS Calibration Important?

For ADAS to function safely, its sensors and cameras must be precisely aligned. Calibration is essential if your vehicle has:

  • Been involved in a collision

  • Had a windscreen or ADAS sensor replaced

  • Undergone repairs affecting mounting hardware

In some cases, poor design or materials can cause sensor mounts to corrode or crack over time. When these components are replaced, a professional calibration ensures the system continues to operate as intended.
